The
Renaissance of Style.
Everybody knows about the extraordinary art treasures that makes Florence
an attractions for thousands of tourist every year. Everybody has
heard about the David by Michelangelo, the Battistero, the Uffizi.
The Renaissance gave here its best results. The arts bloomed in the
14th and 15th century and the masterpieces that were generated in
that period still stand here tall, probably just behind the hotel
or the apartment you chose to be your accommodation
in Florence during your staying in Italy. But there’s another
art which Italians are always been great at. Fashion.
Not so many people know that Florence has a prestigious
haute couture history and that it’s actually in Palazzo
Pitti, one of Florence magnificent buildings, that in the fifties
took place the first Italian fashion show, when extraordinary runways
had been set in the renowned White Room.
Today there are seven fairs promoted by the Pitti Immagine Foundation
where international jet-set people gather to admire the new designers’
collections. In January and in June Pitti Uomo, the most popular of
the seven fairs, dictate the rules of the style for those man who
want to be a la mode in the next year.
But fashion in
Florence is not only shows, models and runways. Fashion is present
everywhere, in both famous designers’ boutique and small high
quality shops. Dolce & Gabbana, Armani, Versace, Bulgari are strung
along Via Tornabuoni and Via Vigna Nuova in Santa Maria Novella together
with some labels actually born in Florence as Gucci, Prada, Pucci
and Ferragamo. Thanks to them, shopping in Florence will make you
feel you’re buying something exactly in the same place where
it is made in.
But if you’re not into big labels, explore the accuracy of local
stylists. Especially if you like leather, you will find plenty of
local atelier where to bay a bag or a jacket that will be a unique
piece and it will make you feel like that too. |
